e-Invoices and e-way bills, from the invoice you already made
An e-invoice is not a second invoice, and an e-way bill is not a second delivery challan. Both are the document you already raised, registered with a government system. 24eTax sends it, brings back the IRN, the signed QR and the e-way bill number, and prints them on the same invoice — no second data entry, no portal tab open beside your billing screen.
Updated: 28 August 2026 — reviewed against current GSTN and NIC behaviour.
The two, in one line each
- e-Invoice — registers the document. The invoice is submitted to the Invoice Registration Portal, which returns an IRN and a digitally signed QR code that must appear on the copy you give the buyer.
- e-Way bill — authorises the movement. It covers goods in transit above the notified consignment value, and carries vehicle and transporter details that keep changing while the goods are on the road.
They are separate systems with separate rules, and the overlap is where the double entry usually creeps in: the same invoice keyed into billing software, then into the IRP, then into the e-way bill portal. When the e-way bill is raised from the IRN, none of that is necessary — the consignment details come from the document that was already registered.
The 24-hour rule that catches people out
An IRN can be cancelled only within 24 hours of generation, only in full, and only while no e-way bill is active against it. After that window the correction is a credit note, not a cancellation — a fact that is much easier to live with when the app tells you the window is closing than when you discover it on day three.
What is built in
IRN and signed QR, in place
Register the invoice from the invoice screen and the IRN, acknowledgement number and signed QR come straight back onto the document and its PDF.
e-Way bill from the IRN
Raise the e-way bill against a registered invoice and the consignment and ship-to details are inherited from the IRN itself, so the two can never disagree.
Direct e-way bills too
Documents that are not e-invoiced — delivery challans, movements for job work — get their e-way bill directly, through the same screen.
The whole lifecycle
Part-B vehicle updates, transporter changes, validity extension, cancellation and the voluntary closure route introduced in August 2026 — all in the app, all archived.
Expiry alerts and a threshold nudge
You are warned before an e-way bill's validity lapses, and prompted when a consignment crosses the value at which a bill becomes compulsory — 50,000 rupees in most states, and the trigger is configurable per business.
Duplicate-safe, fully archived
Every call to the government systems is retried safely and archived. Submitting the same invoice twice returns the IRN that already exists rather than creating a second registration.
Frequently asked questions
Who has to issue e-invoices?
Businesses whose aggregate turnover crosses the notified threshold, for B2B supplies, exports, and the credit and debit notes raised against them. B2C invoices are outside the scheme. The threshold has been lowered repeatedly since the scheme began, so check your own turnover against the notification in force rather than against what applied last year.
What is the difference between an e-invoice and an e-way bill?
An e-invoice registers the document and returns an IRN and a signed QR; an e-way bill authorises the physical movement of goods and carries the vehicle details. A supply can need one, both or neither — an e-invoiced service has no e-way bill, and a delivery challan for job work can need an e-way bill with no e-invoice at all.
Can I cancel an e-invoice after I have issued it?
Only within 24 hours of generating the IRN, only in full, and only while no e-way bill is live against it. Once the window closes, the correction is a credit note. 24eTax enforces the window and tells you which option is still open.
Do I need my own government credentials?
Yes. Both systems issue API credentials against your own GSTIN, created by you on the e-invoice and e-way bill portals. They are entered once per business and stored encrypted, and automatic IRN generation stays switched off until you turn it on.
Does the e-way bill really take the address from the IRN?
Yes. When the bill is generated from a registered invoice, the ship-to details come from the IRN and cannot be overridden — that is the government system's own rule, and the app refuses the override rather than letting the request fail at the portal.
